Beckham has contracted a serious injury (rupture of the Achilles tendon) that will likely keep him out of the South Africa World Cup this summer. According to a journalist from Sky Sports who was next to the pitch, Beckham yelled “it’s broken, it’s broken.” This is an enormous blow to the England international, who had returned to Italy on loan from LA Galaxy, to try and secure a place amongst Fabio Capello’s England squad, in what would have been at age 34, his farewell to international football.

Didier Drogba Celebrating

The Ivory Coast international and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, was elected for the second time, African Footballer of the Year (2009), by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), replacing Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo, who was awarded the prize in 2008, during a gala in Accra, capital of Ghana.

Drogba, who had won the same distinction in 2006, was the favorite in the vote of African national coaches, surpassing the Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o, a pupil of José Mourinho at Inter Milan, and midfielder Michael Essien of Ghana, also of Chelsea.

It was a fantastic gift for the Ivory Coast striker, who also celebrated his 32nd birthday today. Baring any major injuries, Drogba will accompany his national team to the 2010 South Africa World Cup in just three months time.
